About the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and
the Chicagoland affiliate:
The Chicagoland Affiliate, established in
1996, is a young and extremely active affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast
Cancer Foundation. In less than three years, affiliate volunteers have
distributed more than 10,000 pieces of literature, including breast cancer
shower cards, fact sheets and newsletters. Each of these publications stress the
importance of early detection. The affiliate works with local businesses and
corporations to increase awareness about breast cancer through events and
activities, such as the Rally for the Cure annual golf event. Last year, 250
Chicagoland companies partnered with the affiliate on Lee Denim Day. The
affiliate offers a speakers bureau for companies interested in providing
educational seminars for their employees. Special emphasis is placed on outreach
to these communities: African-American, Hispanic, low-income, lesbian, older
women and other groups who are particularly affected by higher mortality rates.
